Bayern Munich has typically operated in Vincent Kompany’s preferred 4-2-3-1, but the Telekom Cup against RB Leipzig offered an interesting glimpse at what a 4-3-3 could look like.
The biggest difference is the midfield structure. Instead of relying on a double pivot behind a No. 10, a 4-3-3 gives Bayern Munich another central midfielder and could provide more control in possession while allowing certain players to operate in roles that better suit their strengths.
It could also give Kompany another tactical option when Bayern Munich need to break down deeper defenses or want greater control of the center of the pitch. Of course, there is a reason the 4-2-3-1 has been the preferred system. It provides a natural attacking midfielder, maintains width through the wingers and offers a familiar structure for the squad.
Still, Bayern Munich has enough midfield quality and tactical flexibility to make a 4-3-3 viable, but is the team more setup for a 4-2-3-1 with its attacking depth? The RB Leipzig match was only one preseason experiment, but should Kompany consider using it more regularly this season?
