BU was awarded the highest A++ Grade by NAAC in the last rating during 2023, for having secured CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 363 on a four-point scale.
“Sustaining the position is fraught with challenges due to stagnation in administration. As the File Tracking and Management System has not been implemented despite the emphasis laid on it by the Higher Education Department, there are instances of files remaining uncleared for seven to eight months,” president of Bharathiar University Teachers’ Association K. Vasanth said.
The daily protests by a large section of non-teaching staff due to a standoff over ESI deductions has only made things worse, according to the association. The grievances of faculty members have also remained unaddressed, with regard to implementation of Career Advancement Scheme. The association had made representations, in vain, for five times to the administration, Prof. Vasanth said.
Teaching faculty are looking forward to the early implementation of CAS as they would be in a position to guide more number of research scholars. From being in a position to guide four research scholars, an Assistant Professor, when promoted as Associate Professor can guide six research scholars. Likewise, an Associate Professor, when promoted as Professor, can guide eight research scholars.
The research output and the composition of senior faculty is vital for the university to sustain its rating, Prof. Vasanth said.
The BU’s NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) ranking witnessed a decline in 2025, mostly due to the ripple-effect caused by administrative deficiencies to academic activities, senior faculty point out.
In the overall India ranking, the university slipped to 76th position in 2025, from 44th spot in 2024. Likewise, in the overall university ranking, BU’s position slid to 46th in 2025 from 26th in 2024. Under the State Public University category as well, the university was pushed to the 10th spot in 2025 from 8th position in 2024.
At present, the three-member VC Committee, that is mandated with the responsibility of processing files without delay, does not exist in the real sense of the term. The Committee, now, has only the Secretary of Higher Education as the convenor. The tenure of one member got over, and another resigned due on health grounds.
