Scariest MLB playoff team right now isn’t winning their division

Major League Baseball has plenty of teams with better season-long records than Philadelphia. But I’m not sure any National League contender wants to play the Phillies right now. Multiple long winning streaks lately, Bryce Harper rolling and a suddenly nasty rotation change the entire October conversation. Tuesday’s 7-1 win over Arizona moved the Phillies into sole possession of the top NL Wild Card spot at 79-60 – and only three games behind Atlanta in the NL East. So, yeah, ummmmmmmmmm, maybe we need to stop treating the Wild Card as Philadelphia’s ceiling. Harper has quietly become ridiculous again. His career-best on-base streak reached 34 games Tuesday after a four-hit night, and the Phillies themselves highlighted the streak when it reached 33 a night earlier. Harper is randomly catching fire for three games. He has been consistently controlling at-bats for more than a month while the team around him started winning almost every night. Mandatory Credit: Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images Then there’s Jesús Luzardo. Since June 10, Luzardo is 9-1 with a 1.86 ERA, and Philadelphia has won 13 of his 15 starts. He also entered Wednesday second in the National League with 209 strikeouts. Add Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez to that equation and think about what a short postseason series starts looking like. Oh, and suddenly Andrew Painter is who we thought he was.  That’s where Philadelphia becomes uncomfortable. October isn’t about having the best 162-game résumé. It’s about having two or three starters capable of wrecking somebody’s series and enough offense to turn one mistake into three runs.. The Phillies have that.
