Sam Burns trails his good friend Scottie Scheffler by two strokes heading into the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday.

Burns posted a superb third-round 62 at TPC Southwind on Saturday, while Scheffler carded a 68.

Now the two Americans will be in the final pairing together in Memphis on Sunday.

Scheffler’s form over the past few years has been sublime, and we haven’t seen someone dominate the professional game like he has since Tiger Woods’ heyday.

However, Scottie Scheffler started his third round at TPC Southwind in really poor fashion.

The 30-year-old world number one made numerous sloppy errors, and his driving and iron play were uncharacteristically poor.

However, Scheffler hung tough, and just like all of the great players throughout the years, he bounced back really well, playing his final 10 holes in three-under par.

Sam Burns makes a Scottie Scheffler prediction ahead of FedEx St. Jude final round

The man from Dallas, Texas, leads Burns by two strokes heading into the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday.

And after his third round at TPC Southwind on Saturday, Burns made a prediction about what he expects to see from the world number one on Sunday.

“I was just saying Scottie is obviously playing great, as he always does,“ the 30-year-old from Louisiana said.

“He’s not going to lay down. He’s going to play great tomorrow. So you’re going to have to go out there and put a really good round together and see if you can catch him.“

Burns will know full well that he will have to be on his very best form if he is to overtake Scheffler in Memphis on Sunday.

He certainly has the ability needed to do exactly that, but much will depend on how Scheffler plays.

Sam Burns says why TPC Southwind suits his game so well

Burns responded when asked by one reporter what makes TPC Southwind such a good fit for his game.

“I think I’m pretty familiar with the grass type. Bermuda is kind of what I grew up on,“ he said.

“Obviously zoysia fairways, but, yeah, I like the way — the layout of it. You get some really tricky holes and some quirky tee shots here and there.

“It’s a really good golf course, and you have to be in control of your ball.“

He then explained why he was able to shoot such a good score on Saturday.

“I think yesterday I didn’t quite get in the fairway enough. So it’s obviously a really quite difficult golf course to play from the rough,“ he said.

“I was telling somebody you feel like this golf course you get in the fairway a bunch and you feel like you can make a bunch of birdies. You get in the rough and you feel like you’re scrambling for par.

“If you get in the right spot on the greens, you can give yourself a lot of opportunities. These greens are so good. If you hit some good putts, you can hole a lot of them.“
