Minford’s Mathis McKenzie finishes 24th at Loretta Lynn’s Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship

Minford native Mathis McKenzie, who qualified for the 2026 Loretta Lynn’s Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motorcross Championship for the third time, finished 24th nationally in the Micro 3 Limited 7-8 Year Old Division at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. this past Sunday.

McKenzie, who won an area qualifier at ChilliTown competing in the Micro 3 Limited 7-8 Year Old Division by winning both motos to seal a regional berth, and finished fifth at Birch Creek Motorsports Park in Danville, Va by winning the first moto and finishing in third place in the third and final moto to seal his third consecutive national championship appearance, claimed a 10th place finish in the first of three motos before finishing 30th and 28th, respectively in the final two motos at the national championships.

The 24th place finish McKenzie earned is based on an aggregate of the three moto finishes.

Portsmouth HS basketball alumni among 13 teams in Ohio to compete in $20,000 to win TAT

Basketball alumni from Portsmouth High School will be suiting up to compete in the first stage of the $20,000 to win The Alumni Tournament on Saturday afternoon, when Portsmouth plays Xenia at Centerville High School in the Dayton Metropolitan Area on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 12 p.m.

Because of the amount of teams that ultimately ended up playing in the tournament in 2026, the grand prize for the winner will be $20,000. That total will be upped to $50,000 from 2027 onward, provided that there is more participation.

Portsmouth, who has a who’s-who of strong alumni playing including Ky’re Allison, DeAndre Berry, and Dion McKinley among others, will play Dayton Thurgood Marshall’s alumni on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. if the Trojans defeat Xenia.

The winner of Sunday’s game advances to the semifinal round, which begins the following weekend along with the championship game on Saturday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex and Recreation Center in Xenia.

Kids from the ages of six to 17 get in to watch for $5, while adult admission for those 18 and up is $10. A family of no more than five will pay $40 for general admission seating.

The Alumni Tournament contests can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/@TheAlumniTournament.
