During the summer, there’s been quite a bit of turnover from the Detroit Pistons roster last season compared to the version that’s going to show up to start the regular season against the Boston Celtics on Oct_ABBR. 20, but there’s one case in particular that is harder to track than the rest. No, not the contract negotiation between 22-year old All-Star center Jalen Duren and the Pistons— that one is easier to monitor since a deal hasn’t been reached yet.
, a prospective rookie who played in the Summer League with the Detroit Pistons last month after winning the National Championship with Michigan earlier in the year. Right off the bat, Gayle looked like a smooth contributor off the wing with multiple 4-for-4 shooting performances in a Detroit uniform to start Summer League. Gayle never cracked the starting rotation, but he was a reliable scoring option off the bench and looked like a player who could make an impact in the G-League with the Motor City Cruise.
Gayle signed a two-way contract with the Pistons after going undrafted back in June, so the Michigan product would have had the option to float between the Cruise and the Pistons as he found his footing in the pros. But as it turned out, a recent court ruling allowed for Gayle and others from the 2022 recruiting class to pursue an extra year of collegiate basketball, so the one-time Pistons Summer League player is back with U-M and traveling with the Wolverines in pre-season competition before an official ruling on his eligibility is levied.
Earlier in the day, Gayle was even spotted over in Lithuania with the Michigan basketball team as the Wolverines prepared to take on the European country’s senior national squad, which resulted in a 96-84 loss from the defending NCAA champs. Gayle did not suit up for Michigan in the contest since he hasn’t been officially ruled eligible just yet, but he was a part of the team in various pre-game practice situations, worked out with the scout team and sat behind the bench during the game.

And since Gayle traveled with the team across the Atlantic Ocean for this exhibition game, it appears that the 6-5 guard fancies the idea of another year at Michigan as opposed to starting his NBA career with the Pistons on a two-way deal. Despite his strong performance in the Summer League, Gayle is not likely to factor into the Pistons’ training camp and pre-season plans moving forward, but his ultimate status depends on the verdict in his court case.
Michigan could use the depth during head coach Mike Boynton Jr.’ s first season in control of the program with Dusty May now in the NBA, and Gayle would assuredly walk back into starter’s minutes given the talent and experience that he’d be adding to U-M’s lineup.
