EAGAN, M.N. (KELO) — Rock Valley, Iowa native Andrew Van Ginkel is set to be one of the Minnesota Vikings oldest defensive players this year at 31 years old, but he’s using this experience to become one of the new leaders on the Vikings defense.

Heading into the 2026 season, the Minnesota Vikings will once again lean on their defense. Led by coordinator Brian Flores, this group has been among the best in the NFL the past few seasons, and this year, Andrew Van Ginkel is one of the main guys leading by example.

“Gink is an amazing vet, he puts his best foot forward, he’s showing a lot of the younger guys, you know, the proper way of doing things, how to practice, how to, you know, make plays, and stuff and showing the right technique and stuff like that,” said defensive lineman Eric Johnson II.

Minnesota Vikings do-it-all defender Josh Metellus echoed this praise for the 8th-year pro, adding he’s grown into an open leadership role.

“Kind of like how 2-2 {Harrison Smith} was. So you could kind of say, you know, that was kind of almost a one for one switch, you know, a guy who leads by example in our room, he’s that kind of that guy.

Van Ginkel says that his motivation comes from his hunger to improve every single day, and he takes a no-nonsense approach in team meetings.

“If coaches are making corrections, or they’re putting a point of emphasis on something, I’m going to come out and make sure I get that accomplished, you know, because obviously it’s a big part of our defense, what they’re trying to get, improve on that day or try to get done,” Van Ginkel said.

He added its this attention to detail that’s helped him carve out a successful career so far.

“I like to take the classroom work and go apply it on the field. And as long as you’re doing that, where you’re asked to be, and what you’re asked to do, you’ll be successful and make a lot of plays,” Van Ginkel said.

As for his Rock Valley, Iowa roots?

Van Ginkel remains present in the community even after years of NFL success.

“Northwest Iowa will be a huge part of my life. All my family’s there, my wife’s family is there. And, you know, I have great memories, a lot of great friends, great coaches, great community. And so, I always try to get back there and always show my love and support for the town,” Van Ginkel said.

The Vikings open up the 2026 regular season Sunday, September 13 when they host the Green Bay Packers.
