KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Fans feel his innings has piled pressure on star Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
  • Pant was dismissed cheaply by debutant Keshara Nuwantha on Day 2.

Fans feel Dhruv Jurel's 50 vs Sri Lanka has put star India wicket-keeper under pressure

The long-simmering debate over India's wicketkeeping future has flared up again in Galle, and this time Dhruv Jurel has thrown fresh fuel on the fire. His assured half-century against Sri Lanka has left a section of fans questioning whether Rishabh Pant can afford to keep batting the way he has.

Both men featured in the same XI at Galle, with Pant retaining the gloves and Jurel selected as a specialist batter at number seven.

That arrangement has only sharpened the comparison, as it puts the two directly alongside each other for supporters to judge in identical conditions.

With Pant having lost the Test vice-captaincy and Jurel in the form of his life, the contrast in their approaches on a turning pitch has become a genuine talking point in Indian cricket.

Dhruv Jurel's composed fifty raises the pressure on Rishabh Pant

Jurel made a well-constructed 51 off 68 balls, striking four fours and a six before falling to a stunning slip catch by Dhananjaya de Silva off Prabath Jayasuriya. His innings stood out for its calm, controlled defence and sharp running on a deteriorating surface.

The knock continued a rich vein of form for the 24-year-old, who struck twin centuries against South Africa A and impressive scores against the West Indies A side in recent months. That consistency has strengthened his case to be viewed as a batter worthy of a place on merit alone.

By contrast, Pant fell cheaply to debutant Keshara Nuwantha as India lost quick wickets with the second new ball. The dismissal, coming so soon after Jurel's measured effort, provided the perfect illustration for those arguing the two are heading in different directions.

Fans react to the Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel comparison

The contrast prompted a wave of reaction online, with many suggesting Pant's place is no longer as secure as it once was. Sports Yaari argued that his reputation would not protect him indefinitely.

"Rishabh Pant's place is under pressure after Dhruv Jurel's fifty. With vice-captaincy gone and every innings under scrutiny, Pant needs to deliver now. In Test cricket, reputation won't save you; runs will," the outlet posted.

One fan drew a direct line between the pair's contrasting styles. They wrote, "Very calm and composed 51 by Jurel on a deteriorating pitch. Clear difference between the way Jurel is playing and how Pant was playing. Don't be surprised if Gabba win quota, X-factor quota of Pant in tests may find its end very soon under coach Gambhir."

Another supporter felt Jurel's superior risk control could soon leave Pant exposed. They wrote, "Now it looks like if any skilled wk starts treating tests like ODIS, they will easily overshadow Pant's style of playing with much better risk control. If Jurel starts doing it, it's over for Pant because he doesn't have shots now."

Tbh now it looks like if any skilled wk starts treating tests like odis they will easily overshadow pant style of playing with much better risk control tbh..If jurel starts doing it.. It's over for pant coz he doesn't have shots now..

A further reaction praised the quality of Jurel's batting fundamentals. One fan wrote, "Jurel batted brilliantly today. The natural defence, sharp running between the wickets, and the way he consistently found the middle of the bat are top-class batting. This is exactly where Rishabh Pant has sometimes lacked."

One fan even wrote, "I believe Jurel is just one 100 away so that Gambhir can remove Pant from the Test team." They believe that if Jurel finds consistency, then it is over for the wicket-keeper.

Gambhir has made it clear over his last two years of tenure that he is not afraid of leaving big names off the squad if they don't perform well. With Gill himself being dropped from the T20 side after his struggles, it won't be surprising if Pant finds himself on the chopping block as well.

Why the pressure on Pant is real but perhaps premature

There is substance to the fans' concerns, and Jurel's form makes him impossible to ignore. A batter capable of scoring hundreds against a probing South Africa A attack and holding firm on a Galle turner offers India a reliability that Pant's high-risk method does not always guarantee.

Yet the comparison risks overlooking what makes Pant special in the first place. His match-turning counter-attacks, most famously at the Gabba in 2021, have won India Tests that few other batters could have, and one loose dismissal on a tricky day does not erase that value.

The likelier outcome is not Pant being dropped but India finding a way to accommodate both, with Jurel's batting simply raising the standard the senior man must now meet.
