Rich Paul owns one of the most profitable sports agencies.

It isn’t always about a big deal; it’s about securing the right one, Paul told Newsweek. That instinct is reflected in his sports agency, Klutch Sports Group, founded in 2012, which most recently negotiated a two-year deal with a player’s option for LeBron James. The deal is valued at $8 million, and signs James to the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN reports.

In total, Klutch Sports Group has 700 athletes on its roster across basketball, football, baseball, and soccer, including Anthony Davis (Washington Wizards), A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles), Albert Suárez (Baltimore Orioles), and Folarin Balogun (U.S. Men’s national team), per Newsweek.

“We started out in just basketball,” Paul told the outlet. “It took me a while to get into football. Even though the calls were coming in, I didn’t feel we were ready. Now we have it, in all these different sports.”

“When thinking about the name [Klutch], the idea was just that. I didn’t want to be dependent on just one thing. I wanted to be able to grow legs in due time,” Paul told Newsweek.

Fara Leff, chief operating officer of Klutch Sports Group, commented:

“There really isn’t a box he fits into. He’s created a distinct lane that has opened doors for him, the clients and the agency.”

In 2023, the agency acquired baseball agency Rep 1 and, two years later, it partnered with Munich-based soccer agency ROOF, Newsweek reports.

What’s more, the agency has an estimated $1 billion in non-playing contracts and $6.27 billion in playing contracts under management, according to Forbes, ranking as the fifth most valuable sports agency.

Looking ahead, Paul told Newsweek that he will focus on the next generation of athletes, offering them guidance in harnessing name, image, likeness (NIL) deals. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, NIL revenue is making it possible for high school and college athletes to build and profit from their own brands, invest in businesses, and launch their own ventures before making it to the pros. “By the time kids get to where we’re at, if they develop these bad habits, we’re screwed,” Paul told Newsweek. “Once these tiger stripes are painted, you can’t change it.”

He later added:

“Youth sports is something that’s my next big thing in terms of really investing.”
