South African batter Heinrich Klaasen has reflected on the benefits of stepping away from international cricket, highlighting how the decision has allowed him greater flexibility between tournament commitments. Klaasen announced his retirement from international cricket on June 2, 2025, ending a seven-year career that included 4 Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is. His final international appearance came in the Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to New Zealand in Lahore in March 2025.
Since retiring from international duty, Klaasen has focused entirely on domestic and franchise cricket. The decision to step back from the international game has given him the opportunity to manage his schedule and recovery between major tournaments, a luxury he did not previously enjoy.
"Retiring from international cricket gave me the freedom to have a break in between these competitions. For the majority of these competitions, I've got about a month, a month and a half, or two months off in between. So that gives me enough time to just reset, take everything in, work on the things that need to be worked on, and just get the body ready for the next tournament." Klaasen said on JioStar.
Klaasen's focus on trophy success and consistency
In the IPL 2026, Klaasen accumulated 624 runs across 15 innings with six fifties, demonstrating his continued form in franchise cricket. His performance in The Hundred 2026 has seen him score 166 runs in 7 innings at an average of 23.71 with a strike rate of 182.41, including two fifties. Manchester Super Giants, his team in the tournament, faced Trent Rockets in the Men's Hundred final on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Klaasen acknowledged the challenge of maintaining his standard while playing less cricket overall. He recognised that winning trophies remains a primary objective for both himself and his team, particularly after a lean period in trophy success.
"Winning trophies is one goal. It has been a lean run on the trophies, so the personal goal is to get into, and get the team into positions to win trophies. Then, obviously, a big challenge now, playing less cricket, is to keep the quality of cricket up. I had a good IPL (624 runs in 15 innings with six fifties); I have had a good start to The Hundred, it was a little bit silent in the middle, but the key was to get some runs under the belt and keep my standard up to what it normally is," Klaasen said.
