Report: ‘Everything is on hold’ as Juventus shift focus to Vicario after Suzuki loan deal fades away

We are entering the final weekend of there being no calcio ahead of the 2026-27 season kicking off next week. And just nine days away from Juventus beginning the new campaign against Frosinone, their goalkeeper situation is very much just as unsettled as it was — and likely much more now! — than it was back at the end of the 2025-26 season when we all knew a change was needed.

Juventus are about to pivot to yet another backup option when it comes to signing a new goalkeeper.

It is now as a result of the potential season-long deal between Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain for Zion Suzuki going from distinct possibility to looking very unlikely to happen all within a day or so. That means the latest pivot to try and bring in a new goalkeeper as a result of Michele Di Gregorio’s host of struggles over the last 12 months has taken us to Guglielmo Vicario being described as “the favorite” in terms of potential candidates. (Which, unless there’s somebody that Giovanni Carnevali and Frederic Massara are working on in the background that we don’t know about, pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the current situation to sign a new goalkeeper.)

However, there’s another twist in all this: As Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio said an hour or two ago, “everything is on hold.”

Oh … well, that’s good, right? Especially with the season all of nine days away from kicking off?

So now we have reached the point in the goalkeeper chase where Juventus have now pivoted not once, not twice, but three times after the initial attempt to sign Alisson Becker ended up in the handsome Brazilian staying at Liverpool this summer. No Emi Martinez. No Zion Suzuki as it looks like, too. Now Vicario?

Even if it’s on loan, it’s hard to really be OK with Juventus — a club who has employed some of the best goalkeepers to ever play this damn sport — going for a player who Tottenham Hotspur can’t wait to get off their roster this summer.

Di Gregorio is still around, and his future hasn’t been resolved yet. Vicario might actually be arriving. This is quite the far cry from seeing two of the best keepers in the Premier League being the main target.

I’m tired, boss. I’m tired talking about backup options to the backup option. We’re reaching the territory where Juventus could end up signing a new goalkeeper just to say they signed somebody and then you might as well just be hoping for the best and potentially expecting the worst. Or maybe just the status quo, I dunno.
