Aston Villa Transfer Latest: Aaron Wan-Bissaka Talks Show Right-Back Is a Clear Priority

Aston Villa have moved on a position that plainly needs attention. According to The Athletic, Villa have held “exploratory talks” over a deal for West Ham United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the 28-year-old “among Villa’s list of targets for the right-back position”.

That matters because this is not random market noise. The report states the role “has been identified as a key position to address this summer” as Villa look to provide competition for Matty Cash. That tells you the thinking at the club. They want depth, reliability and probably a different profile too.

The background is straightforward. “A move for Emerson Royal, the Flamengo right-back formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, did not materialise” and Kosta Nedeljkovic has “interest from Scottish club Rangers and elsewhere”. In short, Villa need a solution and Wan-Bissaka is on the board.

West Ham’s stance is also clear. The Athletic reported on July 7 that the London club “would be open to selling Wan-Bissaka this summer”, valuing him at £25 million. That fee feels significant, but hardly absurd in a market where experienced Premier League defenders are routinely overpriced.

Wan-Bissaka profile suits Villa need

There is no mystery around what Wan-Bissaka offers. He is proven, athletic and defensively strong in one-v-one situations. He has played “190 games for Manchester United across five seasons” and made 65 appearances in two seasons at West Ham. He also started “all four of DR Congo’s matches at this summer’s World Cup”, which points to durability and trust from his national side.

There are caveats. He made 25 league appearances last season as West Ham suffered relegation, and “started two of West Ham’s final seven matches of the season, displaced by Kyle Walker-Peters at right-back”. That is relevant. Villa would need to decide whether they are buying a rebound candidate or a player whose level has settled.

Our View

From a Villa perspective, this is intriguing because it looks practical. Not glamorous, not headline-grabbing, just practical. And good clubs need some of that. If Unai Emery wants genuine competition for Matty Cash, Wan-Bissaka makes obvious sense. He knows the league, he has handled pressure at Manchester United, and he gives Villa a defensive edge in games where the right-back has to defend first.

The question is the price. £25 million for a player coming off relegation, and one who lost his place late in the season, is a number Villa supporters will scrutinise. That said, context matters. The market for full-backs is thin, and proven Premier League experience always carries a premium.

There is also the style issue. Wan-Bissaka is not the most expansive full-back in possession, so this would be about balance rather than flair. Villa fans could reasonably ask whether the club want a specialist defender, or a more aggressive attacking outlet. Still, depth matters, especially with Europe and domestic commitments. If this is about raising the floor of the squad and giving Emery dependable options, it is easy to see the logic. It may not excite everyone, but not every smart transfer has to.
