Arsenal Transfer Latest: Fresh Ezri Konsa Talks Show Gunners’ Defensive Priority

Arsenal have reopened discussions over a move for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, with BBC Sport reporting that fresh contact has taken place in recent days as the Premier League champions look to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s back line.

It is understood Arsenal have indicated a willingness to increase their opening offer of around £30m for the England international. Even so, there remains a sizeable gap between the clubs. Villa’s position is clear, their valuation stands at £60m and they are giving little indication they will soften that stance.

Ezri Konsa Remains Arsenal’s Preferred Target

The 28-year-old is described as “Mikel Arteta’s preferred defensive target”, which is a significant detail in itself. Arsenal are now moving with intent in defence after completing the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, and Konsa’s profile appears to fit the brief closely.

Those making the decisions at the Emirates are known to value players who can offer tactical flexibility, and the report states Arsenal “look favourably on Konsa’s versatility”. That quality has become increasingly important in elite squad building, particularly for a side balancing domestic and European demands.

Aston Villa Stand Firm on £60m Valuation

Villa’s negotiating position looks robust. The report says they are “showing no inclination, as things stand, to accept anything below their asking price”. That will leave Arsenal with a straightforward choice, either bridge the gap or pivot towards an alternative.

Konsa’s recent body of work explains Villa’s resistance. He “played 48 games in all competitions last season for Aston Villa, winning the Europa League”, underlining both his durability and importance.

Arsenal Defensive Search Still Active

BBC Sport also reports that “Multiple sources had told BBC Sport the Gunners also held exploratory talks with Tottenham over a potential move for their club captain Cristian Romero before Spurs agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid.” That suggests Arsenal’s defensive recruitment process has been active and wide-ranging, with Konsa now the clearest live option.

For now, this feels like a developing situation rather than one nearing completion. Arsenal have made their interest known, Villa have set their price, and the next move will reveal whether this becomes one of the summer’s major Premier League transfers.

Our View

From an Arsenal perspective, this is the kind of update that brings cautious optimism. Konsa makes plenty of sense. He is proven in the Premier League, calm in possession, strong in duels and experienced enough to step into high-pressure matches without needing a long adaptation period. If he is truly “Mikel Arteta’s preferred defensive target”, that should matter. Arsenal have earned trust in the market when they pursue specific profiles.

The obvious concern is the price. £60m is a huge fee for a defender approaching his late twenties, even one with Konsa’s consistency. Supporters will naturally wonder whether there is room for compromise, especially when the report says Arsenal’s opening level was around £30m. That is not a small difference, it is a major one.

Still, elite defenders are expensive because reliability is expensive. Arsenal are trying to stay at the top, compete deep into Europe and defend a title. Depth alone is not enough, quality has to be unquestionable. Konsa looks like a player who could improve the squad immediately and offer Arteta the versatility he clearly values.

If Villa remain firm, Arsenal must decide quickly whether this is the right battle to fight. From a hopeful fan’s angle, this feels like a deal worth pushing hard for, provided the final number remains sensible enough to leave room for other key additions.
