The Somalian referee was expected to officiate in the recent World Cup, but he was banned from entering the United States. Authorities in the co-host nation said that Artan had an "association with suspected members of terror organizations." He was then invited by UEFA to officiate the Super Cup match and became the first non-European to take charge of such game. PSG defeated Aston Villa 2-1.
