Red Sox's Aroldis Chapman triggers massive $13M option for next season after 40IP milestone originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Boston Red Sox have been one of the biggest storylines in MLB over the last month, as they have absolutely caught fire. A team that once looked like it had no chance of making the playoffs is now firmly in the postseason picture. However, the road has not been easy for Boston, especially with the team's recent struggles. On Saturday, the Red Sox got a much-needed win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. “The resilient Boston Red Sox push on despite their lengthy winning streaks being a thing of the past. The Red Sox shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-0, thanks to Sonny Gray and some late-game hitting on Saturday night,” Boston.com’s Kaley Brown wrote. Going into the game, the Red Sox knew they had Aroldis Chapman available if needed. The veteran closer has been lights-out for Boston all season and even won AL Reliever of the Month for July. “Chapman was named AL Reliever of the Month over that stretch after recording a 0.75 ERA and 10 saves in 10 appearances. That led to Chapman sticking around in Boston, where he headed into Saturday with season-long stats of a 2.04 ERA and 27 saves over 33 appearances,” Bleacher Report’s Julia Stumbaugh wrote. Chapman has been outstanding for the Red Sox this season, and after recording the save on Saturday, he likely secured himself a significant payday for next season. “Aroldis Chapman has reached 40 IP in the 2026 season, triggering the vesting option for $13 million for 2027. At the conclusion of the season, Chapman will have a physical, after which the option will become official,” MLB reporter Francys Romero wrote. This is great news for Chapman as he gets deeper into his career, but it also demonstrates just how dominant he continues to be. The Red Sox have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs, and Chapman has played a major role in getting them to this point. Now, assuming Chapman remains healthy, he will have a $13 million payday waiting for him next season. At 38 years old, he continues to be one of the most reliable bullpen arms in baseball and is being rewarded for his remarkable longevity and production. More MLB news:
