Among some of the moves the could make over the next couple of months, depending on what happens in the postseason, it feels like adding a shortstop might not be the craziest idea.
Reports had indicated at Major League Baseball's trade deadline that the Red Sox were interested in a deal involving Elly De La Cruz, though that obviously didn't come to light.
As the Red Sox prepare for the playoffs, many of their decisions this winter will depend on how things look. There's also a sense that Major League Baseball could end up in a lockout, which would prevent trades from going through.
However, once everything is settled, a few players are expected to be dealt, and one insider recently suggested that Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels could be one of them.
For Boston, Neto would be exactly what this team needs, as he's a legitimate star-level talent and is still just 25 years old.
“Neto’s name was a popular one leading up to the Trade Deadline, but the Angels opted to hang on to their shortstop while dealing away other controllables including José Soriano, Jo Adell and Ryan Zeferjahn. With three more years of arbitration eligibility remaining, Neto would be the Angels’ most attractive trade chip if the new general manager – whoever that may be – wants to tear the roster down and start their own rebuild.
