The Reading School District is increasing security procedures for Thursday night’s varsity football game against Muhlenberg High School following a weapons scare at another recent Berks County high school football game.
Spectators attending the 7 p.m. game at Albright College’s Shirk Stadium will be screened, and bags will be searched for contraband, including weapons, tobacco products and controlled substances, Dr. Khalid N. Mumin, superintendent, said in a message posted Tuesday on the district’s website.
Gates will open at 6 p.m., and spectators are being encouraged to arrive early because the additional security measures could result in longer waits, Mumin said.
The district also is asking fans to avoid bringing backpacks, large bags or other unnecessary items to speed up the screening process. Diaper bags and medically necessary items will be permitted after inspection by security personnel.
The added precautions come days after a football game between Gov. Mifflin and Wilson high schools was ended early following a report that a student had a weapon.
The Aug. 28 game at Gov. Mifflin Stadium was stopped with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter, with Wilson leading 48-7. The teams were sent to their locker rooms and spectators were evacuated.
Gov. Mifflin School District officials said a student reported that another student had a weapon. The student was investigated, but no weapon was found on the student or on campus, officials said. The report was subsequently determined not to be credible.
Mumin did not specifically cite the Gov. Mifflin incident, saying the increased security was being implemented “in light of recent events in our local community at athletic events.”
“We understand these additional procedures may cause some inconvenience, and sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation,” Mumin said. “The safety and security of our students, staff, families, and community remain our highest priority.”
