The calendar flipped to September and the slow build toward the 2026-27 season picks up speed by the day for the New York Rangers.
You need not be reminded that the Rangers most recently played a game back on April 15. Yes, that’s nearly five months ago. And though it was a 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, it was Game 82 of a miserable season on Broadway. Last place in the Metro. Last place in the Eastern Conference. Only two NHL teams finished with worse records overall.
Heck, the Rangers were so bad that they even lost the NHL Draft Lottery, dropping two spots from third to fifth.
OK, that wasn’t their fault. But you get the idea. It’s been a long offseason following one of the worst regular seasons in recent memory for the Rangers.
However, like a fresh sheet of ice, the Rangers have a clean slate heading into a new season. There’s some cautious optimism after Chris Drury retooled the roster and started to build the prospect pool back up.
And let’s face it, we’re all excited for training camp to open and then for the 2026-27 season to begin. We can’t help it. It’s hockey, and the Rangers, and now that September’s here, let’s go!
