Rangers have reached an agreement with AEK Athens to sign James Penrice, with the Scottish defender set to travel to Glasgow for his medical.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Penrice will arrive in Glasgow on Friday to complete the formalities ahead of his move to Ibrox.

The 27-year-old is expected to join Rangers on an initial loan deal, with the Light Blues holding an option to make the transfer permanent.

Penrice has been a target for Rangers throughout the summer, but the club have accelerated their pursuit following an injury to Tuur Rommens.

Manager Derek McInnes has been keen to strengthen his options at left-back and now appears set to get the reinforcement he has been looking for.

The timing of the deal will come as a welcome boost for McInnes, particularly after Rangers endured a disappointing night in Europe on Thursday.

The Gers could only manage a 1-1 draw against Jagiellonia Bialystok at Ibrox.

This result meant they failed to secure progression, ending their hopes of qualifying for the Europa League.

Attention will now turn towards domestic matters, with Rangers keen to ensure they have sufficient depth ahead of a demanding campaign.

McInnes is understood to want Penrice available as quickly as possible, with Rangers facing St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup on August 16.

The arrival of Penrice would give the manager another option on the left side while also providing much-needed competition in the position.

The Scottish defender has spent the summer on Rangers’ radar after 20 appearances in the Greek league.

He won 46 percent of his aerial and 43% of his ground duels while helping his team keep six clean sheets.

With the agreement in place, Penrice is closing in on becoming the latest addition to McInnes’ squad as Rangers look to recover from their European disappointment.
