Quinn Ewers went from looking like a potential answer in the Miami Dolphins to becoming one of the biggest quarterback mysteries of the Dolphins’ offseason. The former Texas standout flashed enough during OTAs to make a starting push seem plausible. Then training camp arrived, and the picture changed fast.
His decision-making dipped. The consistency disappeared. Suddenly, the same QB who looked aggressive and decisive in the spring was struggling to keep his footing in the summer. That sharp regression had Omar Kelly wondering how Ewers’ camp fell apart so quickly.

Kelly raised the issue on September 2, calling Ewers’ regression one of the biggest mysteries of the Dolphins 2026 training camp. The bigger surprise was not simply that Ewers struggled but was how different he looked from the quarterback who had impressed during the offseason program.

That slide ultimately cost Ewers his spot in the Dolphins. They traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round pick before roster cutdowns, ending a dramatic fall for a player who finished his rookie season as the Dolphins’ starter in three games. The timing made the move even more striking. Ewers entered the offseason as the clear No. 2 behind Malik Willis. Instead, his poor camp opened the door for Miami to move on. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan later made it clear that performance drove the decision.
That assessment also explains why Ewers’ strong rookie finish was not enough to save him. In four appearances last season, including three starts, he completed 66% of his passes for 662 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. There were legitimate flashes there.
Except the 2026 preseason exposed the other side. Ewers completed only one of eight passes against the Washington Commanders and threw an interception before suffering a groin injury. He never got another preseason appearance, while the Dolphins brought Mark Gronowski back after initially waiving him. Kelly had already raised the possibility of Ewers being cut if another QB became available, specifically mentioning Anthony Richardson as a potential factor. Instead, the Dolphins found its solution through a trade.
Now Ewers gets a reset with the Jaguars behind Trevor Lawrence. They moved on from Nick Mullens on the active roster; however, they retained the veteran on their practice squad, giving Ewers a younger developmental option beside Lawrence.
However, for the Dolphins, the mystery remains. How did a quarterback who looked like a legitimate competitor in OTAs fall so sharply by training camp? That question may follow Ewers into the Jaguars, where he gets another chance to prove the Dolphins gave up on him too soon.
