Miami Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers sustained a groin injury in the team’s preseason loss to the Washington Commanders on Friday. The injury reportedly occurred early in the game, but Ewers, the team’s second-string quarterback, played through it until he was rotated out of the game for third-string passer Cam Miller. The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson was the first to report the injury on Sunday.
The Dolphins re-signed quarterback Mark Gronowski on Sunday, likely to give Ewers time to recover while adding another passer for training camp practices this week. According to Jackson, Ewers could “miss a few days or a week” due to the injury. Miami is scheduled to host the New York Giants in a joint practice and their second preseason game this week.
Ewers had a rough day against the Commanders on Sunday, coming into the game on the Dolphins’ second offensive series after starter Malik Willis led the offense to an opening drive touchdown. Ewers finished with one completion on eight attempts, gaining 27 yards. He threw one interception and finished the game with a 1.6 passer rating. The injury could have played a factor in the struggles and could explain why the 2025 seventh-round pick never appeared comfortable on Friday.
Miami will move forward with Willis at the top of the depth chart, with Miller likely taking the second-team reps until Ewers is fully recovered. Gronowski, who started training camp with the Dolphins before being waived last week, will provide depth as the third option.
