Tuesday was a tough day for the Miami Marlins minor league affiliates, as every team came up short against the opposition.
Triple-A
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Norfolk Tides in a 9-3 landslide defeat in the series opener on Tuesday. Deyvison De Los Santos hit two home runs, adding to his season total of 21 homers and 70 RBIs. Matthew Etzel, coming off winning IL Player of the Week honors, extended his team-leading on-base streak to 12 games after recording his 18th double of the season. Jumbo Shrimp RHP Brandon White was charged with the loss after giving up six earned runs on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts through 5.1 innings on the mound.
Double-A
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos dropped a close matchup against the Columbus Clingstones, 3-2, in the series opener on Tuesday. Despite the loss, the Blue Wahoos’ (37-20) magic number to clinch the Second Half SL South Division title and secure a postseason berth had dropped to five. They currently hold a 6.5-game lead over the Clingstones with 11 games to play in the season. Ethan O’Donnell hit a solo home run in the second inning to extend his on-base streak to 21 games. Marlins’ No. 22 prospect 2B Adrian Santana knocked in two hits including an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning. Santana is batting .318 through his first 21 games in Double-A since being acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.
High-A
The Beloit Sky Carp fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 4-2, on Tuesday. The Sky Carp (36-25) have one week to make up a three-game deficit to finish in first place in the Midwest League South second half standings. Liomar Martinez allowed two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched for the Sky Carp. Chase Jaworsky and Brian Sanchez each hit solo home runs to power the Sky Carp.
Single-A
The Jupiter Hammerheads fell to the St. Lucie Mets 7-6 on Tuesday despite a strong pitching performance by LHP Dameivi Tineo, who struck out 10 batters with three runs allowed (two earned) over five innings pitched. Echedry Vargas hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. His 26 homers and 88 RBIs lead the Hammerheads. Wessley Roberson went 2-for-3 for his first career hits and RBI.
Rookie
The Marlins have two prospects who were selected as Florida Complex League All-Stars. LHP Jonas Uzcategui posted a 3.81 ERA with 42 strikeouts, a 14.54 SO/9 and a .202 AVG through 15 games. Hyun Seung Lee produced a .309/.396/.569 offensive slash line with six home runs and 40 RBI.
