Today's college basketball is worlds different compared to the early 2000's. Players can transfer to any school of their choosing, with programs throwing gobs of money to land stars.

That's what makes Seth Trimble a rarity. Trimble played the first four years of his collegiate career at North Carolina, then tested his skills in the NBA Summer League. A recent injunction against the NCAA gave Trimble a fifth year of eligibility, which he will use at Louisville in the 2026-27 season.

In a recent episode of The Field of 68 podcast, co-founder Rob Dauster said Trimble's transfer is exactly what's wrong with college basketball."

“He is a guy who stuck through an era where nobody sticks through ever," Dauster said. "Played his way through injury into having an All-ACC-caliber season. Hit one of the biggest shots that we’ve seen in North Carolina basketball all-time. To see him leaving and going to another ACC school, I hate that’s where we are right now in this process. In mid-August, we have a guy that should be a Tar Heel forever, going and playing not just with another program, but a conference rival that might beat them this year and might end up winning the ACC. That sucks. That takes away a lot of what I feel like college basketball and college sports should be about.”

Trimble averaged a career-best 14 points and three assists per game last season, helping the Tar Heels to a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. After a solid run through the Summer League, Trimble proved himself worthy of an NBA roster spot.

Now, Trimble will play for one of UNC's greatest new ACC rivals. It just doesn't feel quite right – and we agree with everything Dauster said.
