Breaking a five-year streak of starting the fall at home, Mizzou’s 2026 debut brings a deep 18-returner core into a challenging regional field.

“I think having almost everyone coming back on the team for a second year, at least at a minimum,” head distance coach Kyle Levermore said. “Some people are now coming back for their fourth year with us. So I think that’s really been kind of a noticeable difference, just in like the maturity and kind of the way they’ve approached things.”

Heading into the season opener, both Mizzou squads earn national recognition, with the women ranked No.24 and the men ranked No.30 in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.

The women will lead off with a 5K at 8:30 a.m. CDT, followed by the men’s 6K at 9 a.m. Live results will be available at pttiming.com.

Racing Updates

While Levermore and his staff have an overarching race strategy, the question of who is set to race remains tentative as of Tuesday morning. One definitive absence is Jean Kipchumba, who Levermore confirmed will not be able to compete until the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis. Beyond Kipchumba, the rest of the roster remains available as final decisions are made.

“We have a race plan, like I mentioned, that is built on the pieces of training that we’ve been working on,” Levermore said. “And built on the DNA of any championship roster, which is basically like as simple as we want to be one of the teams that closes the best over the last two to 3k, and if we can do that, we can build a lot of stuff on top of it, a lot of layers, a lot of different tactics. And so, we’re going to go out there on Friday, and I want to see us execute a really good last two to 3k, and that’s kind of how I will evaluate our performance on Friday.”

Execution over those final two to three kilometers will serve as the team’s primary benchmark for the season opener.

Course History

Built in 1995, the Iowa State Cross Country Course holds the distinction of being the first facility in the nation designed exclusively for competitive cross country racing. Since hosting the NCAA Division I Championships in its inaugural year, the venue has regularly hosted major postseason events, including the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Midwest Regionals.

As for the course, the program has made hefty improvements in irrigation and two large grass berms to improve spectator views. Friday’s meet marks Mizzou’s first competition on the Ames course since the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.

Expectations for the Season Opener

Levermore’s primary race expectations for Friday centers on execution rather than final placement. Instead of focusing on where the Tigers finish on the leaderboard, his standard for success is how effectively the team manages their effort. Specifically, he is targeting that aggressive finish that will lay the foundation for the rest of the season.

“I don’t really care, you know, what the final team order is,” Levermore said. “But I do care about you know, is the quality of our last two or three kilometers, and you know we’ve been really honest about that being something that that’s how we’re evaluating. It doesn’t matter what anyone else does; it matters how we execute our plan.”

Overall Thoughts on the Team

Levermore also noted how “pleasantly surprised with where everyone’s fitness is” across the board after just two weeks of preseason camp. He credited both the coaching staff and the athletes for working together to get everyone integrated quickly, which is a huge stepping stone given all of the new players on the team.

“Everyone’s done a good job of getting on the same page,” Levermore said. “And you know, this morning I felt like was probably the most in sync we’ve been as a group, and I think that’s just a good sign that the last two weeks have kind of started to settle in, and people are starting to get familiar with how things are going to roll.”

How quickly Mizzou’s new additions mesh with its veteran core will be a key factor in establishing the team’s momentum early in the schedule.

To read more about Missouri’s Cross Country team, follow @Rock MNation and @SophBleedsLA on twitter/X.
