With the 2026-27 NBA season approaching, Duren could play out the year on his $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he and Detroit cannot agree to a long-term contract by the end of September.
“One source briefed on the process says Duren is increasingly prepared to play out the coming season on his $9.6 million qualifying offer — with the intent to become an unrestricted free agent next summer — if no deal with Detroit materializes by the end of September,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote on The Stein Line.

Stein noted that taking the qualifying offer would represent a significant risk considering Duren’s breakout 2025-26 season. The center earned his first All-Star selection and made the All-NBA Third Team after averaging career highs of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65.0% from the field.
However, Duren’s restricted free agency has lacked the outside leverage typically available to a player seeking a significant raise.
“The challenge Duren faces hasn’t changed much since early July,” Stein wrote. “He seeks a lucrative new five-year deal reflective of his leaps last season to All-Star and All-NBA status — playoff struggles be damned — but there is no team in the marketplace with salary cap space to make a run at Duren that exerts pressure on the Pistons to increase their offers.”

Negotiations have not progressed smoothly throughout the offseason. According to Siegel, the two sides temporarily stopped negotiating in August before eventually reopening discussions.
“These two sides took some time to themselves,” Siegel said on Clutch Scoops. “Jalen Duren and the Pistons were not negotiating in mid-August. There was about a week and a half, two-week period when they were not talking to each other whatsoever. Those conversations have since resumed.”
Duren’s potential decision to accept the qualifying offer would dramatically change the stakes for both sides.
Playing on the one-year deal would allow Duren to reach unrestricted free agency in 2027 rather than remaining subject to Detroit’s matching rights. A strong fifth NBA season could give him significantly more leverage on the open market and potentially position him for the lucrative contract he is currently seeking.
The approach also carries substantial risk. An injury or decline in production could damage Duren’s value after passing on the security of a long-term agreement.
Stein acknowledged there will be skepticism about whether Duren is actually prepared to take that gamble until he officially accepts the qualifying offer.
For now, the Pistons and their young All-Star still have time to find common ground. With training camps approaching at the end of September, however, Duren’s willingness to play on the $9.6 million qualifying offer gives Detroit’s biggest unresolved piece of offseason business an increasingly significant deadline.
