With the season almost a week away, the are doing everything they can to figure out how best to work with a transfer laden roster. With 39 new transfers and 16 freshmen coming in, new head coach Matt Campbell has had to improvise. As a result, Penn State fans could expect to see new faces in new places...and maybe several position changes as well. Throughout fall camp, there has been signs of Campbell's tinkering and experimenting with players switching positions. The latest move could portend to be the most intriguing...and confusing.
Junior defensive end has made the move to a tight end group already loaded with talent. Penn State fans could have every right to questions why, but when you consider Mears' size and inexperience, it could make sense. Mears rarely saw the field, only getting 11 snaps. In the long term, a move to tight end really changes nothing. Still, should he get on the field, he could look to be a useful asset as a run blocker or even in short yardage situations. At 6-3, 257 pounds, Mears could get several looks in the backfield.
This is not the only time a switch such as this has been made. Campbell also moved 2026 QB recruit to the position group as well. Both him and Mears were most likely not seen as long term fits at their respective positions, so it will be interesting to see if this results in potential transfers for the both of them.
