Is New England Patriots star Drake Maye a top-five quarterback in the NFL?
The Athletic’s Mike Sando ranked Maye No. 8 overall in his annual quarterback rankings this year, determined by voting from 50 league executives and coaches.
Maye threw for 4,394 yards last season and led the league in completion rate at 72 percent. The 23-year-old finished as the AP NFL MVP runner-up behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who won the award.
Though Maye was on the cusp of winning the MVP award last season, the competition at the quarterback position in the league today is stiff. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, all former MVPs, have cases to be considered the best quarterback in the league.
Nevertheless, Maye has the combination of accuracy, volume passing and team success from last season to be considered among the best players in the league at the position.
He could take things to another level with the many additions the Patriots have made on offense ahead of the 2026 season. They signed Romeo Doubs in free agency and traded for three-time All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown. The team also made improvements along the offensive line, including the signing of former first-round pick guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
