The could be getting an important piece of their bullpen back at exactly the right time. Right-handed reliever Jason Adam continues to make progress from the right shoulder strain that has kept him on the injured list since the beginning of July.

According to MLB.com, Adam off the Petco Park mound on Sept. 7 and is scheduled to face hitters in Arizona on Sept. 10. That’s a big step toward a potential return.

Adam has been one of San Diego’s most important late-inning relievers since joining the organization. When healthy, he’s capable of handling high-leverage situations and serving as the bridge to the back end of the bullpen.

The Padres have managed without him, but getting Adam back would make an already dangerous relief corps even deeper.

San Diego currently has Mason Miller and Adrian Morejon handling many of its biggest late-game situations. Adding Adam back into that mix would give manager Craig Stammen another trusted option when protecting a lead. Bradgley Rodriguez has filled Adam’s role tremendously. But those innings are only becoming more important.

The Padres improved to 78-68 after completing a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, extending their winning streak to four games as they continue fighting for an NL Wild Card spot.

Every game matters from here.

There are still hurdles for Adam to clear before he returns to the active roster, but facing hitters represents another meaningful step in the right direction. San Diego doesn’t need Adam to rush back.

The Padres need him healthy for the games that matter most.

, should return from his injury very soon as well.
