Major League Baseball’s trade deadline made the San Diego Padres easy to understand. Robbie Ray and Casey Mize were supposed to make them more dangerous. They have. But San Diego’s increasing.

Major League Baseball’s trade deadline made the San Diego Padres easy to understand. Robbie Ray and Casey Mize were supposed to make them more dangerous. They have. But San Diego’s increasing postseason chances aren’t simply about the expensive pitching additions. They’re also being driven by exactly the kind of complementary player championship teams eventually need. MORE: MLB awards predictions for the 2026 season Luis Campusano provided the latest example Wednesday. With San Diego locked in an extra-inning fight against Milwaukee, Campusano delivered the walk-off hit in the 11th to complete a sweep of one of baseball’s best teams.  The Padres’ X account captured the importance of the moment beyond one dramatic win: Campusano’s hit put San Diego alone in the second NL Wild Card position. Aug 12, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano (12) hits a walk off single during the eleventh inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: David Frerker-Imagn Images Ray and Mize can stabilize October’s rotation. The Padres already have star power throughout the roster. But postseason series are rarely won exclusively by the biggest names. Eventually somebody else has to deliver. Campusano has spent years teasing San Diego with offensive potential without fully establishing himself as a difference-maker. If he’s finally becoming a reliable threat at catcher, the Padres become considerably harder to navigate. MORE: Scene at Yankee Stadium turns dangerous as 3 fans ran onto the field at the same time And San Diego doesn’t have much room for error. At 65-57, the Padres are fighting Arizona for positioning while still chasing Los Angeles in the NL West. Every incremental improvement matters now. The deadline rotation upgrades raised San Diego’s floor – getting production from the bottom half of the lineup raises its ceiling. That’s why Wednesday felt bigger than one walk-off. San Diego just swept Milwaukee, and the deciding moment didn’t belong to Ray, Mize or another superstar. It belonged to Campusano. The Padres acquired pitching to improve their October chances. Players like Campusano may ultimately determine whether they actually get there. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
