If you had told me, going into this series, that we would win 3 of 4, I would have been happy. I knew we weren’t going to run the table. As Meatloaf never said, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad.
But…..when you win the first three, you get greedy. I wanted four. I wanted, at very least, an effort.
Max Scherzer can’t be faulted. He had a great game. He might be the only Jay to have a great game, but he was very good. Five innings, three hits, two walks, one earned, four strikeouts. You really couldn’t ask better from Max.
He is now at 3004 innings pitched. He’s 139th all time.
You could have asked better from the offense. Just two hits. And really not many good at at bats. The threw eight innings, likely could have gone nine, but why push it when it is 7-0. There was no offense to speak of. I don’t know that Payton Tolle was all that great, but we seemed to be in a hurry to get it over with.
Vlad and Nathan Lukes had a hit each.
Spencer Miles gave up two hits, but got out of his inning.
Braydon Fisher had a quick seventh.
Chase Lee….well, not so quick. Four hits, Four earned (a grand slam). And that was the game.
Lazaro Estrada gave up two more.
Jay of the Day: Max Scherzer (0.14).
Other Award: Lee (-0.23), Clement (-0.12), Valenzuela (-0.11, plus he picked the wrong pitch to challenge in the first inning. Why?), and Okamoto (-0.10). and Springer (-0.09).
I don’t know that a first inning challenge is ever a good idea, but a first inning challenge on a pitch that wasn’t even close to a strike is never a good idea. Maybe not the reason the Jays lost, but it really didn’t help.
Tomorrow the Yankees are in town. Let’s win another series.
