No. 2 Toombs County starts campaign with tough test against Class AAAAA power

LYONS, Ga. (WSAV) — Toombs County starts its quest for its third consecutive state title game appearance this Friday with a trip to the Hostess City to face Benedictine. The Bulldogs raised the bar for the program after winning their first state title in 2024. Last season, Toombs came four points shy of going back-to-back. They fell, 17-13, in a loss to Worth County. Head coach Buddy Martin says the first game — against the Class AAAA state runners-up last year — will be a good test. Martin feels his guys are prepared to step up to the challenge. "Eleven years ago when I came with Georgia, they were in our region here," Martin said. "So know a lot about them. I've watched them. They're the standard, right? They've done that. We we want to be that, too. So I think it's a great opportunity. Big-time, Week 1 game. It's a playoff game. It's a power-ranking game."
