Aaron Donald has officially come out of retirement to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams and join the NFL’s single-season sack record holder, Myles Garrett, on the defensive line, making Los Angeles one of the strongest Super Bowl favorites in recent years. In light of the news, ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky had quite the take earlier this week when he said that Donald’s return could have a massive impact not only on his own legacy, but also on the list of all-time quarterbacks.
The way Orlovsky sees it, reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford could crack his list of the top five quarterbacks of all time by leading the Rams to another Super Bowl title this season, after doing so in Super Bowl LVI in 2022.
“Think about the impact this move can not only have on Aaron Donald, but other people’s legacies,” Orlovsky said. “Matthew Stafford gets another one. He has an MVP in his back pocket. He becomes top-five, top-seven of all-time conversation.”
Orlovsky’s take has drawn quite the reaction from Fox Sports’ and The Volume’s Nick Wright, who has found it “unacceptable” that someone who was viewed as a borderline Hall of Famer not very long ago could suddenly find themselves on their position’s Mount Rushmore.
“So Orlovsky said if Matthew Stafford gets another one, meaning another championship, he becomes a top-five, top-seven all-time conversation,” Wright said on What’s Wright? with Nick Wright.

“Some opinions not only are wrong, they’re unacceptable,” he went on. “Saying that we could end this season with Matt Stafford a top-five quarterback is a perfect example of an unacceptable opinion. I personally, even if they win the Super Bowl this year, would not have Matt Stafford in the top 5 of quarterbacks of the last 25 years. Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees. There’s five just this quarter-century. Brett Favre, Steve Young.”
Wright went on to list some quarterbacks he finds it appropriate to put Stafford in discussions with.
“You want to start having a discussion about him versus Aikman? No problem.Him versus Kurt Warner? We can have that discussion. You just can’t have the opinion that if Matt Stafford wins the Super Bowl, he might be one of the five greatest quarterbacks of all time.”
To Orlovsky’s credit, Stafford’s MVP has all but ended any debate on whether he’s a sure-fire Hall of Famer. Still, Wright makes a fair point in arguing that even if he led Los Angeles back to the promised land in his age-38 season, it’d be hard to make a case for him as a top-five quarterback since 2000, let alone one of the best of all time.
