(Photo by Boris Streubel - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images Bayern Munich may finally have a serious suitor for João Palhinha, and it could come from a familiar destination. Newcastle United are reportedly in talks over a permanent deal for the Portuguese midfielder after their pursuit of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Aston Villa’s attempt to bring in Palhinha both ran into problems (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):

Newcastle are in talks over the permanent signing of João Palhinha. The club are hoping to add the midfielder after their pursuit of Pierre Emile Højbjerg and Aston Villa's loan move for Palhinha both broke down last week. Palhinha is re-assessing his options. Palhinha is now reassessing his options, with Benfica and Sporting also interested. However, according to the report, the midfielder appears to prefer remaining in the Premier League if the right opportunity becomes available. That could give Newcastle an advantage as they look to strengthen their midfield. For Bayern, a permanent transfer would be the preferred outcome. The club rejected Aston Villa’s proposed loan deal recently, with board member for sport Max Eberl confirming that there was “no chance” of an agreement on that structure. Bayern are looking for a permanent solution instead. That makes Newcastle’s interest particularly significant. Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham in 2024 after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders. He subsequently spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, giving him another full year of experience in England. A return to England therefore would make a lot of sense for the 31-year-old. Newcastle, meanwhile, could provide Bayern with something Villa could not: a potential permanent buyer. The biggest question now is whether Newcastle can agree on a fee with Bayern and convince Palhinha that St. James’ Park is the right next step. After a frustrating spell in Munich, the Portuguese midfielder may finally have a clear path forward. For Bayern, getting Palhinha off the books permanently would be an important piece of unfinished summer business.
