João Palhinha’s future at Bayern Munich could be heading toward another twist, with Newcastle United reportedly emerging as a potential destination for the Portuguese midfielder to move on a full transfer.

According to Marca journalist Diego Pico, Aston Villa is now out of the race for Palhinha after a loan assignment was ruled out by the Bavarians, but Newcastle United has entered the picture strongly. The Magpies are reportedly prepared to offer Palhinha a transfer and a three-year contract.

That development could give Bayern Munich another option as the club considers Palhinha’s future.

Palhinha joined Bayern Munich from Fulham with the expectation that he would become an important defensive midfield presence, but his time in Munich has not unfolded as smoothly as many expected. Competition for midfield minutes has remained fierce, he has been sent out on loan, and Bayern Munich could be open to a move if the right offer arrives.

Newcastle United could make sense for Palhinha. The Premier League is already familiar territory for him and Matthias Jaissle is a new coach, who could offer Palhinha a fresh start.

A three-year contract would also give Palhinha some long-term security at 31-years-old. With Aston Villa apparently no longer an option and Newcastle United pushing forward, the next question is whether the Magpies can convince Bayern Munich to agree to a deal.

Of course, the finances will be key and there is — at least — a little animosity between the clubs stemming from comments made last summer after the Magpies overpaid for then-VfB Stuttgart attacker Nick Woltemade after the Bavarians could not convince Die Schwaben to sell the Germany international to them.

Bayern Munich is rumored to want €25-€30 million for Palhinha, who carries a total salary package of €12 million (€10 million base + €2 million bonus).
