After months of speculatory reports and swirling rumors, New England has traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick.
On today’s “Instant Reaction” edition of the Patriots Roundtable Podcast, hosts Eddie Marotta and Tyler Geis react to the news and examine what Boutte’s trade means for the Patriots moving forward.
Trade speculation surrounding the fourth-year wide receiver dates all the way back to the pre-draft process ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, but was renewed with a heightened sense of urgency this offseason.
A June 1 trade for All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown was poised to significantly cut down Boutte’s target volume and snap share in 2026, as both have primarily aligned as “X” receivers throughout their careers. In anticipation of the NFL’s worst-kept offseason secret, the former New England receiver reportedly requested a trade away from Foxboro early in the offseason (per MassLive’s Karen Guregian).
That trade took time to materialize, and in the process, Boutte was a standout through summer training camp practice sessions. His unequalled chemistry with quarterback Drake Maye was on full display on a per-practice basis, highlighted by nearly daily spectacular downfield grabs.
Prior to his departure, Boutte had shown marked improvement with each passing year — culminating in an outstanding 2025 campaign that featured 33 receptions on 46 targets with 551 receiving yards (16.7 yards per catch, fourth in the NFL), and six touchdowns in 14 regular season games.
After trading for Brown at the outset of June and signing wide receiver Romeo Doubs to begin the new league year in March, Boutte’s long-term forecast with the Patriots was in doubt. Rather than letting the talented wide out walk in free agency, New England used the trade to re-coup assets previously surrendered to upgrade the roster elsewhere.
Now, Boutte has a new home for 2026 — and a much more legitimate opportunity to maximize his earning potential on the open market as a free agent next spring. For the Patriots, they’ll move forward with Brown and Doubs as their top receiving options along the boundary, with the potential for increased production from second-year wide receiver Kyle Williams and veteran Mack Hollins.
