The season kicked off in Nevada over the weekend, although the weather, specifically lightning storms, caused some delays and cancelations. Two of the state’s top three teams suffered tough inter-sectional losses while top ranked Bishop Gorman looks ready for their titanic top five national matchup.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Nevada high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Aug. 18.

1. Bishop Gorman (1-0)

The Gaels beat Losee 41-0 in a game that was called at halftime due to weather. A lighting storm in the area delayed the game nearly two hours. Junior quarterback Ace Amina got the start and finished an efficient 4-4 for 70 yards and a touchdown and the defense was lights out led by fast rising sophomore edge Braylon Ivory. Next up for Gorman will be their highly anticipated matchup against national power Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco August 21 in a game pitting a pair of perennial top 10 powers.

2. Liberty (0-1)

Liberty lost a tough one to a very good Honolulu (Hawaii) Mililani team 31-24. The Patriots led at halftime 24-14 but couldn’t get the offense rolling in the second half. BYU running back commit Ezra Sanelivi had an impressive 1st half including a 56 yard touchdown run and athlete Selby Griego had nearly 200 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. The Patriots have a couple of weeks off and then will have another tough test in Lehi (Utah) Skyridge, ranked No. 5 in the state, on September 4.

3. Spanish Springs (0-0)

The Cougars kick off their season on Saturday (Aug. 22) against Carson.

4. Arbor View (0-1)

The Aggies lost to 20-14 to Salt Lake City (Utah) West, one of the top teams in the Beehive state. The game pitted two of the top quarterbacks in the region with West led by Michigan commit Kamden Lopati and Oregon State commit Thaddeus Thatcher leading the way for Arbor View. Both defenses played well and held the offenses in check but West running back Dovani Dixon scored from four yards out with just over a minute left to pull out the win. Thatcher threw for two touchdowns in the loss. Next up for Arbor View is a game against perennial San Diego power Carlsbad on Friday (Aug. 21).

5. Churchill County (1-0)

In what was the game of the weekend, the Greenwave stepped up in weight class and knocked off the defending 5A State Champs, Bishop Manogue, 32-30. It was the first time Churchill County had beaten the Miners since 1988. The Greenwave, the defending 3A state champs, showed they’re one of the top teams in the state, regardless of class and move up to No. 5 in the Massey Ratings. Two-way standout Maxton Richardson made big plays on both sides of the ball and looks like a legitimate college prospect and sophomore quarterback Camden Richardson completed 12-16 passes for 258 yards and four touchdowns. The Greenwave will try and knock off another state top 10 team in Reed on Friday (Aug. 21).

6.Sloan Canyon (0-0)

Sloan Canyon was up 14-7 against a very talented Fresno (Calif.) Central East before the game was canceled due to weather and ruled a no-contest. Running back Jermaine Wilson looked electric with the ball in his hands and had 90 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. Wilson has burst, contact balance and a lot of juice and definitely looks like one of the top un-committed back out West. Next up for the Pirates will be a game against McQueen, who beat them in the 4A State title game last year.

7. Centennial (1-0)

The Bulldogs got the win over over Coronado 7-0 in a game that was called at halftime due to weather. New Centennial QB Blake Nadler was impressive, completing 13-17 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota commit Jayden Thomas caught four passes for 73 yards and should put up big numbers this season. The Buldogs take on Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral on the road Friday.

8. Reed (0-0)

The Raiders open up their season on Friday (Aug. 21) against a strong Churchill County team.

9. Shadow Ridge Mustangs (0-0)

The Mustangs will open up their season on Friday (Aug. 21) against Durango.

10. Moapa Valley (1-0)

The Pirates opened their season on a hight note with a 27-21 win over Beaver. Senior quarterback Kamden Drosos put on a show, throwing for 106 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another 106 yards and two more scores. Moapa Valley will take on Hurricane on Friday (Aug. 21).

Nevada School Football Rankings: Nos. 11 – 25

11. Bishop Manogue Miners (0-1)
12. Palo Verde Panthers (1-0)
13. Foothill (0-0)
14. McQueen Lancers (0-0)
15. Elko Indians (0-0)
16. Reno Huskies (0-0)
17. Coronado Cougars (0-1)
18. Legacy Longhorns (1-0)
19. Las Vegas Wildcats
20. Faith Lutheran Crusaders (0-1)
21. Green Valley Gators (0-0)
22. Mater Academy Knights (1-0)
