USA TODAY Sports has released a ranking for the top 25 best helmets in college football. Nebraska made the list, earning the No. 20 spot with its white gloss base, red stripe, block red "N" and red facemask. Jordan Mendoza and Craig Meyer of USA TODAY Sports highlighted the Huskers' recognition with the block "N," emphasizing how the team became a powerhouse when it added the block "N." Though it's a simple design, the history written during that span helped solidify the status of the block "N." For over 50 years, Nebraska has worn the block "N", first adding it back in 1970, ahead of its eventual back-to-back national championship run. Prior to the block "N", the Huskers wore numbers on their helmets before transitioning to "NU" in the late 60s. The original block "N" also had gray facemasks, which Nebraska wore for over a decade. The Huskers then switched the gray facemasks with red in 1982 and have remained the staple since. Though Nebraska has changed its main uniforms multiple times over the decades, including this upcoming season, the main helmet remains the same. Nebraska has done different helmet variations, mainly for alternate uniforms, including a black rendition of the block "N," but there are no signs of the current design changing.
