The Namakkal Corporation instructed commercial establishments to obtain trade licences within 15 days, failing which the shops will be sealed.

The licence grants legal permission to carry out a specific commercial or industrial trade within the corporation’s jurisdiction.

According to the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Rules 2023, all micro, small, medium, and large enterprises, as well as all types of other commercial and business establishments, are required to obtain a trade licence from the corporation. The fee for the trade licence ranges between ₹1,000 and ₹40,000, based on the space and type of the business. The validity of the trade licence is one year.

In Namakkal Corporation, there are 1,641 establishments that need trade licences. Of these, 1,367 have already obtained their licences. The corporation have served notice on the remaining 274 establishments, directing them to obtain the licences. Till date, the corporation has earned ₹27 lakh through issue of trade licences.

Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji said if any industrial unit or other commercial establishment continues to operate without a valid licence, it will be closed and sealed and further action will be taken as per the applicable rules.

On Thursday, a special camp was conducted by the corporation to help businesses apply for trade licences. During the camp, 30 establishments submitted their applications, the Commissioner added.
