If there's been one significant storyline across the WNBA this season, it may just be officiating.
Close eyes follow referees across any sport, but with a growing number of foul controversies surrounding WNBA stars throughout the 2026 season so far, more intense scrutiny has followed. From excessive physical interactions between players, to inconsistencies in how in-game complaints about foul calls are addressed, league officials have had a lot to handle.
Some players, of course, have caused more trouble than others. Among the WNBA's leaders in technical fouls in 2026 are Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, rivals since their college days and never shy about looking for a foul call.
Here's a look at Clark, Reese and other WNBA stars' updated technical foul totals for the 2026 season.

Most technical fouls in 2026 WNBA season
As things stand in mid-August, two players are on the verge of a potential automatic one-game suspension due to their technical foul totals: Clark and Reese.
Controversy has surrounded Clark since the moment she stepped on a WNBA court — mostly off the court, to no fault of her own — but her gripes with officials have reached a new peak in 2026. With seven technical fouls, Clark has often been seen complaining about non-calls to referees in Fever games, while she's also received techs for altercations with opponents.
Reese, meanwhile, is also a known vocal, physical leader on the court, something she's owned throughout her career. Her status as one of the WNBA's top paint threats makes her a natural candidate to rack up fouls, but in 2025, she had to serve a one-game suspension for her technicals. Now, she's on the verge of doing it again in 2026 for some of her scuffles and arguments.

Caitlin Clark
Clark has been a magnet of sorts for technical fouls, tallying seven across the season. She would have had eight, if it weren't for the Aug. 8 tech called on her for accidentally bumping into a referee being rescinded following a swift review.
There's a case to be made that Clark should have fewer technicals than she actually received — a few of the calls that went against her look questionable upon further scrutiny. Nevertheless, she'll have to be at her best behavior, or close to it, to avoid that dreaded eighth technical and summary automatic one-game suspension.
Angel Reese
Reese, too, has drawn the referee's ire on a handful of occasions. The Atlanta forward touts a motor like few others in recent basketball history — men's or women's. Sometimes, she flies too close to the sun; she was suspended one game after tallying a league-high eight techs in 2025.
For all of her occasional pyrotechnics, Reese hasn't picked up a technical foul since early July. She'll look to keep her run going in the remaining 11 games of the season.
Natasha Cloud
On a per-minute basis, Cloud might outdo Clark and Reese in terms of technical foul prowess. The Sky guard has picked up half a dozen in 941 minutes, good for an average of one technical every 156 minutes.
Cloud picked up three techs in July alone, showcasing her bark for a Chicago side that has struggled throughout the year. Given the Sky's toils — they sit 5.5 games above the bottom of the standings — it wouldn't be surprising to see Cloud pick up more.
Kahleah Copper
At her best, Copper is one of the league's best scorers. The Mercury standout ranks sixth in the league in scoring, averaging 20.6 points per night.
She's also a fierce competitor, as evidenced by her technical count. She's up to six on the season, the last of two came on double technicals. Copper isn't afraid to show her teeth to her adversaries. When you have five All-Star appearances, an All-WNBA second team berth and a Finals MVP under your belt, it's easy to see why.
Alyssa Thomas
Copper, Thomas and Kelsey Plum spearhead an impressive three-headed trio in the Valley of the Sun. Despite their gifts, Phoenix finds itself comfortably outside the playoff spots, sitting 6.5 back of the Wings. Perhaps that can explain some of Thomas' frustrations this year. She has five techs under her belt, two of which are of the double technical variety.

WNBA technical foul suspension rules
In the WNBA, a player or coach automatically receives a one-game suspension when they reach their eighth technical foul of the regular season. The discipline for technical No. 8 also comes with a $1,500 fine, an increase from $1,000 for every foul from No. 4 to No. 7.
From there, every two technical fouls past eight (No. 10, No. 12, etc.) results in another one-game suspension.
The technical foul count resets for the WNBA playoffs. However, if a player accumulates a fourth technical foul in one playoff run, that will result in an automatic one-game suspension and $1,500 fine.
