Mio basketball star who averaged 42.6 points makes college selection

MIO — If you follow Mio senior Mia McGregor on social media, you’ll see a lot of different gyms and arenas from her relaxed view courtside. 

Or, as McGregor puts it: Courtside > Poolside. 

There’s certainly no other place you’d expect to find one of the most prolific girls basketball players in Michigan high school basketball history than in a gym. 

Certainly not lounging poolside. 

The past three years of McGregor’s high school career at Mio have brought countless courtside pictures, many from visits to college programs seeking her services for the next four or five years. 

And, this week, McGregor finally found the courtside she’ll call home, committing to High Point University. 

A two-time Division 4 Player of the Year with a season to go ahead, McGregor chose High Point over numerous other Division I offers, including Butler, Richmond, Tulsa, Harvard, Toledo, Nevada and Dayton. 

She’ll head into her final season at Mio with 2,678 career points, surly on her way to becoming the state’s all-time leading scorer on the girls side. She sits in third at the moment.

The mark is currently held by former Central Lake and Michigan State great Jasmine Hines with 3,034 career points.

McGregor already owns state records for season points with 1,071, which she scored as a junior last season, to go with a 42.6 points per game average, also a state record.

She scored 866 points as a freshman and 741 points as a sophomore. 

If she becomes the all-time scoring leader on the girls side, Mio High School will claim both the girls and boys career scoring leaders in MHSAA history. Jay Smith of Mio has owned the state’s boys mark since graduating in 1979, with 2,841 points. 

High Point, located in North Carolina, is coming off back-to-back women’s Division I NCAA tournament appearances, along with a 2025-26 Big South title. 

They finished the ’25-’26 season 13-3 in conference and 27-6 overall. 

In the winter months ahead, McGregor will lead a Mio program that’s earned three straight district titles at the Division 4 level.
