Before Mikel Brown Jr. became the newest young face of the Brooklyn Nets, there were plenty of moments along the way that never made the headlines.

Those moments are at the center of Brown's appearance on the Green Light Views Podcast, where he sat down with host Jonathan Green for a nearly 45-minute conversation about his development, his family, his work ethic and the experiences that helped shape him into the player he is today.

Released on Aug. 8, the episode gives Nets fans a more personal look at Brown beyond what they saw during his lone college season at Louisville.

Green and Brown began the conversation by going all the way back to the beginning. Brown explained that he was accustomed to playing against older competition from a young age, dating back to when he was just five or six years old and would play with kids who were two or three years older.

That experience helped him become comfortable with the speed and physicality that came with playing up. By the time he was an eighth grader competing against older players, Brown already had years of experience being challenged by players who were bigger and more advanced than him.

But Brown made it clear that talent alone was never going to be enough.

He credited his father for establishing that mentality early in his life.

“Nothing's going to be given to you. You're going to have to go and earn every single thing that you've worked for.”

That mindset has followed Brown throughout his development. Green recalled seeing Brown's work ethic firsthand, including one memorable instance when Brown stayed behind after a tournament because he didn't want to miss an opportunity to attend an All-American camp. Brown ended up staying on Green's couch, arriving late at night before becoming one of the first people in the gym the following morning.

For Brown, those sacrifices were simply part of the process.

The conversation also touched on his time playing alongside VJ Edgecombe, who has already made the jump to the NBA. Brown revealed that the two still talk regularly, with Brown using those conversations to learn what life is like at the next level.

He asks Edgecombe about everything from the daily routine to travel and how NBA players handle the demands of an 82-game season. Brown's reasoning was simple: Edgecombe has already reached the destination Brown was chasing, so there is plenty for him to learn from his former teammate.

Brown also reflected on some of the biggest stops in his journey, including Overtime Elite, Team Loaded, DME Academy and the McDonald's All-American Game.

His high school career included plenty of memorable performances, including a 50-point game for DME. Brown admitted that he didn't even realize he had scored 50 until someone told him after the game because his focus was simply on trying to help his team win.

His college career at Louisville provided another collection of standout moments.

Brown discussed playing in front of packed crowds at places such as North Carolina's Dean Dome, as well as his 45-point performance against NC State. He also hit 10 three-pointers in that game, setting an ACC freshman record according to the conversation. Brown said the entire day felt different, from his pregame routine with his father and uncles to the way he felt once the game began.

Brown's competitive side came through again when the conversation turned to one-on-one basketball.

He explained his love for one-on-one basketball and why he believes guards need to be capable of creating their own shots. Brown said he uses one-on-one work to develop moves that can actually translate into games, rather than simply stringing together unrealistic combinations.

Brown's path to the NBA was anything but an overnight rise.

There were years of playing older competition, early mornings in the gym, sacrifices with his family, and countless workouts that came before the national attention. Now, after hearing his name called sixth overall in the 2026 NBA Draft by Brooklyn, those experiences provide an important window into the foundation Brown is bringing with him to the Nets.

The Green Light Views Podcast conversation gives fans another perspective on the journey that ultimately led Brown to Brooklyn. Throughout the episode, he talks about the people who helped him along the way, the work that went into developing his game, and the mindset that has continued to drive him as he takes the next step in his career.

For Nets fans getting their first look at Brown as a professional, the episode offers a chance to understand the person and competitor behind the No. 6 pick.
