Whitmore was recently linked to Miami as the top option for him to have a fresh start and contribute to winning basketball. The Houston Rockets drafted Whitmore with the 20th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, but they quickly lost faith in his potential. Other young talents like Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, and Reed Sheppard became the real important pieces for the future.
The Washington Wizards traded for Whitmore last summer, but he failed to prove his worth in the NBA to keep him on the roster. Cleveland recently acquired Whitmore as part of a five-team trade to land Peyton Watson. However, they are fully expected to cut Whitmore since he doesn’t fit into the rotation. Miami and other teams could take the chance on a 22-year-old improving in a new situation.
How Cam Whitmore Would Fit Into Miami Heat Rotation
The Heat only had six trustworthy role players a week ago to show their biggest issue entering the season. Signing Klay Thompson turned out to be a huge move since they needed a three-point shooter and he fits into the roster perfectly.Names like Giannis, Klay, , , and will likely be the starters. Whitmore would have no chance of starting either way, so his best bet would be to become a serviceable bench player for the overall depth.
Young teams lacking at the forward position would be foolish to not at least talk to Whitmore about his future. The are one high-profile team who badly needs talent after failing to do anything this offseason. Whitmore could be a good fit here since the team lacks a clear starting small forward.
Many other teams will likely try to get involved too, but Miami offers the chance to contend if he plays well enough to stay on the team. The Heat organization also has a history of helping struggling players break out by getting the most out of talent, like with , , and others in the recent past.
