The Locust are a motley crew of bloody, barbaric nightmare creatures. According to Fawcette, the Spore Matron is inspired by the Gas Barge (those giant floating skull monstrosities) from Gears of War 2. But where the Gas Barge was all bone, the Spore Matron is all flesh: a bulbous, 10-foot-wide balloon who spews spores that fly after you, only stopping when you shoot them out of the sky. Was Fawcette’s initial description accurate? Well, you can decide for yourself:
Image: The Coalition/Xbox Game StudiosBeyond the new Spore Matron, some older enemies are getting reimagined in E-Day. Art director Aryan Hanbeck pointed out that the Boomer (longtime Gears fodder, really tall, wields heavy weaponry) is somehow even more jacked.
“He’s a bit of a reimagining of the Boomer that has been in the games the whole time. He's much bigger, he's nine feet tall, and he's just much girthier, and just kind of walks a little bit slower,” Hanbeck said. “He just looks like a tank.”
Speaking as someone who fought against a few Boomers for both : confirmed.
Gears of War: E-Day is also evolving the Wretch, a Gollum-like creature you’d hear before you see. Fawcette noted how, in the original games, their infamous piercing screams would shatter nearby glass. But in E-Day, the screams actually have a “disorienting” effect on your character.
“They have an actual effect on the gameplay,” Fawcette said. “Which is, again, taking that idea of what we loved about the original game, and making your encounter with them so much more rich.”
From the few hours I’ve played, E-Day captures the Gears of War spirit — right down to the uniquely weighty shooting and cover systems — while pushing the series forward in new ways. It also colors in some narrative gaps that have persisted for years. The city setting of Kalona offers a never-seen-before look at a pre-apocalypse Gears of War world. The legendary chainsaw rifle gets its origin story. Protagonist Marcus Fenix reveals himself as a style icon on par with Leon S. Kennedy. And, yes, you fight some flying testicles.
“It's awesome,” Fawcette said. “There's lots of cool shit.”
Gears of War: E-Day will be released on Oct. 6 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
