BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- A longtime Baton Rouge high school football rivalry returns this week as McKinley and Capitol prepare to battle for bragging rights in the third annual “Downtown Showdown.”
Before the teams meet on the field, players, coaches and administrators from both schools will come together Wednesday for a joint press conference to preview the matchup.
The press conference is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the McKinley Alumni Center, located at 1520 Thomas Delpit Drive.
The Downtown Showdown kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Memorial Stadium.
EBR Schools said McKinley enters this year’s game looking to keep the Downtown Showdown trophy for a third straight season. The Panthers narrowly defeated Capitol 20-18 last year.
The rivalry between the two schools dates back to 1950. McKinley and Capitol played annually until 2019 before reviving the series in 2024 with a trophy and bragging rights on the line.
Despite McKinley’s recent wins, Capitol holds the advantage in the historic rivalry, leading the all-time series 37-34-3.
