Mayor holds meeting with theatre owners
Taking forward his campaign against the over-pricing of food and beverages in cinemas in malls and multiplexes, Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V.Rajesh held discussions with theatre owners on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, he said that though the civic body has limitations in intervening in the issue, he said that the Corporation has put forward a list of suggestions for the theatre owners to follow.

The theatre owners have been asked to put up drinking water dispensers with tumblers near all exit points from the cinema hall. Complaints have been received that even food for children is not being allowed inside some theatres. The Corporation has insisted that such restrictions should not be put in place. Only women employees should be allowed to check women’s bags.

“During the Onam season, the Corporation had received several complaints regarding the pricing in theatres. Though we have limitations in controlling this, the Corporation will carry out checks to ensure that none of the norms which were agreed during issuing or renewal of licenses for theatres are violated. Some theatres have been found to have removed fire and safety systems after getting the licenses and put up seats even in this space. The theatres also can have contracts only with approved waste collection agencies,” said Mr. Rajesh.

He said that the Corporation will convene another meeting of theatre owners after 15 days. The time has been provided to theatres to make the necessary changes in functioning based on the Corporation’s suggestions.
