The story when Aaron Rodgers was in town was that the Packers never spent in the draft to get him WR help. That narrative isn’t in play during the Jordan Love era and fantasy football managers were hopeful about Matthew Golden’s potential in this offense.

The story has changed a bit after an underwhelming rookie campaign and that’s tanked his price a bit. Is now the time for savvy managers to invest?

Should You Draft Matthew Golden in Fantasy Football?

Golden’s Redraft Fantasy Football Value

Golden finished with 29 catches for 361 yards and zero touchdowns, a line that reads more like a camp body than a first-round investment. Fantasy football is very much a “what have you done for me lately” business and that makes his discounted price tag a logical response. The question now is whether the price is an opportunity or a warning sign.

The 2026 season sets up better on paper than last year ever had the chance to. Romeo Doubs is gone to New England and Dontayvion Wicks left for Philadelphia, clearing real snaps and target volume that didn’t exist for Golden as a rookie. You can question his talent/fit, but at the very least, we should get enough volume this year to make a real assessment.

The scheme fit still makes sense too. Love leads the league in deep throw rate since 2023 and Golden built his college profile on exactly that kind of play. He averaged 17 yards per catch as a senior at Texas with 58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. Green Bay’s other primary pass-catching weapons, Jayden Reed and Tucker Kraft, do most of their damage after the catch rather than down the field, which leaves a lane open for a receiver who wins vertically.

Kraft working back from injury only adds to that opening early in the season. But there’s a real geography problem lurking if Golden hasn’t locked down a role by December. He’s a Texas kid through and through, born there and playing all three of his college seasons in-state, and the fantasy postseason brings three home games in cold Wisconsin weather plus a Christmas Day trip to Chicago. If he’s not thriving prior to the finishing kick, it’s hard to imagine his stock rising in a meaningful way at the tail end of this fantasy season.

Win Your League: Fantasy Football League Winners in 2026: Jeremiyah Love, Quentin Johnston, and Kyle Pitts Have High Potential

The realistic comp here is Quentin Johnston, a late first-rounder in 2023 who doubled his production from Year 1 to Year 2. That’s not a league-winning outcome, but it’s a legitimate step forward, and it’s the kind of jump that would make you plenty happy given what Golden currently costs.

Golden’s Dynasty Fantasy Football Value

Strip away the disappointing counting stats and the dynasty profile still has real bones. A first-round receiver paired with a 27-year-old quarterback is a shape worth chasing, especially at this price. Green Bay has every incentive to find out what it has in Golden across the rest of his rookie contract, and if you believe in the vertical talent and the opportunity in front of him, there’s a genuine path to this working out.

Division context helps too. Points are going to keep getting scored in the NFC North given where the other three offenses are trending, and that’s the type of enviornement that can pay the fantasy bills.

None of this is a lock. The connection with Love still needs to show up on tape and in the target share, not just in theory. But paying a discounted price for a talented rookie who struggled with role and target share, rather than one who was simply overwhelmed by the position, is a defensible bet. There are receivers stuck in far worse situations right now, playing behind quarterbacks with no long-term plan at all. Omar Cooper Jr., Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion all fall into that bucket, and Golden’s situation looks considerably better than any of theirs.
