Utah Royals FC opened up a doubleheader weekend for professional soccer in Utah at America First Field with a 3-2 victory over Bay FC Friday evening in front of 7,020 fans, continuing its unbeaten streak against the visiting Northern California side in its sixth head-to-head matchup for the 2024 expansion partners.

Real Salt Lake battled to a 1-1 stalemate in front of 20,119 fans against Minnesota United FC Saturday night, both sides finding the net late in the second half. The match was RSL’s fourth consecutive at home over a congested month of August, with two wins and two draws heading into Wednesday’s contest against Dallas.

Utah Royals featured first-ever match with three Japanese goal scorers

After conceding in the sixth minute, the Royals responded with lightning-fast efficiency, as Japanese defender Miyabi Moriya netted the equalizer a minute and three seconds later to her first goal as a Royal and first NWSL goal since Nov. 2, 2025.

A 24th-minute goal by Narumi Miura, assisted by forward Cloé Lacasse, earned the Canadian her eighth assist of 2026, tied for second-most in the NWSL with Portland Thorns forward Pietra Tordin.

In the 81st minute, URFC midfielder and Utah native Courtney Brown entered the match, hitting a milestone with her 50th NWSL appearance.

The 79th-minute game-winning penalty conversion by Japanese forward Mina Tanaka helped lift the Royals to yet another Club record, winning 11 games on the year — the most in a single season. With all three of Utah’s goal scorers having Japanese citizenship, the trio became the first ever to do so in the same game in NWSL history.

Solans nets 8th MLS goal in 1-1 stalemate

In Saturday evening’s match, Columbian defender Juan Jose Arias made his first MLS start with poise and energy following multiple Leagues Cup starts.

To begin, the match was mainly a defensive battle highlighted by RSL defender Lukas Engel. RSL Captain and goalkeeper Rafael Cabral found himself out of position as a header made its way toward the open net, but the Dane came up big, racing to make a goal-line clearance in the 34th minute.

RSL’s 2026 Golden Boot leader, Sergi Solans, ultimately gave the home side the lead in the 82nd minute assisted by star midfielder Diego Luna. The Spanish rookie netted his fourth goal in five matches throughout the month of August, and his 12th goal across all competitions in 2026 (eighth in MLS).

With the visitors finding the late equalizer, the Claret-and-Cobalt drop to a 10-1-2 record in its home fortress at America First Field.

Quotable

“Having three Japanese players score a goal is something incredibly special, I’d say,” URFC head coach Jimmy Coenraets said. “You can see the chemistry between them. So there is so much to be proud of tonight.“

“We were creating those chances all night, and if we bury them, it could easily have been a 3-0 or 4-0 game like the last two games,” RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “We didn’t capitalize and we gave up an easy goal and it’s a 1-1 game, but is the performance bad? No, not at all, and that’s what I said to the players. Tonight, we didn’t capitalize, and that’s the difference.“

Game summary

URFC

The Friday night matchup at America First Field was action-packed from the beginning.

Bay FC took the early lead, netting a goal in the sixth minute after a deflected pass out of the box by URFC goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn. Just a little more than a minute later, the home side equalized, quickly bringing the ball up the field and into the opposing penalty box for Miyabi, who tied the score at 1-1 just seven minutes in.

The Royals then took a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute, with a long-range bullet from Japanese midfielder Narumi for her third of the season. However, the visitors soon leveled the score once again, netting a goal off a corner kick in the 29th minute.

After a scoreless second half, the home side regained the lead with a 79th-minute goal from the penalty spot. The score brought Tanaka to six goals in 2026, to go along with four assists. The forward’s game-winning goal lifted the home side to a 3-2 victory and brought Utah atop the NWSL for the most goals scored thus far in 2026 at 35, also a team record.

RSL

The Claret-and-Cobalt pressured the Minnesota defense early on before Utah native Zach Booth was subbed out of the game in the 13th minute due to injury, Polish midfielder Dominik Marczuk entering in his place.

After a 34th-minute clearance by Engel, the home side was forced to defend four consecutive corners, thwarting consecutive offensive chances for Minnesota to send both sides into the locker room scoreless.

While RSL maintained a high level of possession throughout the first 25 minutes of the second half, the visitors were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the 70th minute and Cabral showcased his presence between the posts, making a 1-on-1 save to keep the Loons off the scoresheet.

Real Salt Lake continued the second half with energy.

Continuing to pressure the visitors’ defense to find tangible offensive opportunities, Solans nearly gave the home side the lead in the 66th minute, his shot going just right of the goal. The fight from the RSL side finally paid off with an 82nd-minute goal by Solans to give his team the late 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, Minnesota found the equalizer, snapping RSL’s 353-minute shutout streak. The draw on Saturday night now extends RSL to a five-match winless streak.
