Martina Navratilova has hit back at claims that assert that the ongoing transgender debate surrounding the WNBA has an ulterior motive, possibly something political. Navratilova made it clear that transgender athletes getting an opportunity to play in women’s sports is a real concern for female athletes.

An article published claims that Republicans are using the ongoing issue to wage a cultural war and ultimately push the transgender community out of public life. It also writes that the amount of transgender athletes in women’s sports are extremely rare, hence that is a none issue.

Navratilova has strongly hit back at these claims, saying:

“No red herring. It’s real for the thousand of women and girl athletes around this country and the world who are directly impacted by males competing in female sports. Nothing “red herring” about that at all.”

The Czech-American’s response was aimed broadly at what the article suggested below, which is that the transgender issue is being used as a political tool, rather than helping protect women’s rights.

“This was never about saving women’s sports. It was always about dehumanizing trans people and using them as a societal scapegoat and cudgel against Democrats, who still haven’t figured out how to effectively deal with this non-issue. In the end, this was just one of the first steps towards “eradicating transgenderism,” and most of the country fell for it hook, line, and sinker.”

“Republicans are starting a culture war to rile up their base, co-opt Democrats into agreeing with them, and create precedents which push transgender people out of public life altogether”

Martina Navratilova Reflects on Enes Freedom’s WNBA Stunt

The article also argued that NBA players Enes Freedom and Royce White, who are trying to enter the WNBA draft identifying as women, were making a point, which was very obvious to see.

Martina Navratilova, in response, said that the two players did it to genuinely make a point:

“They did this to make a point. Pretty clear to see.”

After Sophie Cunningham spoke against transgender inclusion in women’s sports, NBA player Enes Freedom announced that he wants to join the WNBA, identifying as a woman.
