Newcastle United’s determination to keep Lewis Hall is facing an increasingly serious challenge, with Manchester United continuing to push for the England international despite the Magpies repeatedly insisting he is not for sale.

The situation already escalated before the weekend when The Sun reported that Hall remains determined to move to Old Trafford despite Matthias Jaissle replacing Eddie Howe, and could have requested a transfer.

“Hall wants to make the move to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window,” The Sun reported. “The 21-year-old’s wish to leave Newcastle has not changed despite the arrival of new boss Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe after his shock exit last month.”

Now, Roundtable’s Callum Foy reports that the situation has progressed quickly into direct discussions between the two clubs, although there has not yet been a breakthrough over a transfer.

“Roundtable understands that Manchester United have held club-to-club talks with Newcastle United for English left-back Lewis Hall,” Foy reported. “It is understood that there is yet to be a significant breakthrough, but United remain interested in Lewis Hall after planning talks with his club earlier this month.”

If the report is true, it’d represent a notable development after Newcastle previously rejected an enquiry from Man Utd and maintained that Hall would not be allowed to leave following the departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

“It has been widely reported that Lewis Hall is not for sale this summer, as Newcastle United have already lost Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali,” Foy reported.

Multiple outlets agree that Hall is Man Utd’s first-choice target to strengthen the team at the left-back position, where manager Michael Carrick is looking to improve his rotation, adding to Luke Shaw and Harry Amass.

The financial side remains a significant obstacle, but likely not the deciding one — that’d be Hall’s ultimate decision on whether to force a transfer or not. Previous reports suggest Man Utd is willing to pay up to £60 million for Hall, but the steady resistance from Newcastle to another major departure might require Man Utd to go considerably higher.

If Hall really pulls an Isak/Bruno, Newcastle would find itself in a very tough position because Jaissle already needs additional full-backs, let alone if Hall leaves. The Magpies are on the verge of landing Benfica’s Amar Dedic, who can operate on either flank, but Tino Livramento’s injury has left the squad desperately short of senior options, and there is no natural left-back in the roster other than Hall.

Hall is also contracted through 2029, meaning Newcastle has no contractual need to sell nor any true pressure to sanction a deal this summer. However, with the player reportedly pushing for the transfer and the clubs reportedly discussing a potential deal, Man Utd’s pursuit has seemingly moved beyond the exploratory stage.

Do you think Hall’s wishes to move on and join Manchester United end in a transfer this summer, or will the Magpies hold onto him for at least another year? Share your thoughts below.
