Experience does take teams a long way in college football, but every championship team still needs young players who overachieve to start their collegiate careers. You see that often occur at Ohio State and other big programs. The USC Trojans have a freshman with high personal expectations: defensive end Luke Wafle.
In a recent article, Billy Tucker ranks the best freshman in college football, and Wafle comes in as the second-best freshman in the Big Ten. Here is what he had to say about Wafle:
"Wafle surged to No. 24 on the SC Next 300 and earned his fifth star late in the recruiting process. He's one of the most college-ready defensive linemen in this class, and the Trojans need him now. Listed at 6-6, 265 pounds, he pairs pad leverage with a quick get-off that stresses tackles off the edge, and his motor simply never quits. After USC's front wore down late last season, Wafle's contributions early on could be the fix."
The Trojans definitely needed more consistency on their defensive line and a potential game-changer who can make plays that impact the game. The Trojans might have their solution for that with freshman Luke Wafle. He is as ready as it gets for his age, and having a coach like Gary Patterson will only expedite his path to becoming a great player. Wafle will be needed early and often this season to help the Trojans get where they want to be this season.
